Categorisation of land drainage systems in subhumid climate based on their contribution to flood runoff.

  • Original language description

The existing drainage systems on agricultural lands, no matter whether well maintained or neglected, continue to operate spontaneously and provide more or less favourable conditions for tillage and crop growth. To be able to quantify their hydrological roles, one has to know how the drainage systems look like and operate. This can only be achieved if the drainage systems and their positions in the landscape are described and categorised. The preliminary results include maps and histograms of the age ofdrainage systems, maps of drainage densities and maps and categorisations of drainage systems with respect to various criteria. It is concluded that this effort is useful, especially when it is supplemented by suitable techniques for estimation of the hydrological behaviour of drainage systems.
