Identification and Database Creation of Selected Historic Irrigation Structures in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The study presented the current state of irrigation systems in the Czech Republic, where we have around 175 thousand ha of irrigated areas. Of this area, about 41% is currently functional. Selected historical irrigation structures were documented using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Since the 19th century, there has been considerable technological development of these structures and an increase in irrigated areas in the Czech Republic. Irrigation has become an important part of the Czech landscape. Large complex irrigation systems covering tens to hundreds of square kilometres have been built. Towards the end of the 20th century, there was a significant decline due to changes in the political regime, relationship to land ownership and other changes in the agricultural sector. Irrigation systems and structures were often destroyed, devastated or left unmaintained. Records are still not systematically kept. In the context of climate change, the threat of drought and the irregular distribution of rainfall during the growing season, the issue of irrigation is again coming to the fore.
