Original language description

The mission of the book about the service tree (Sorbus domestica) is to introduce the general public to this unusual European tree with scattered occurrence in Africa and Asia. The service tree possesses many useful properties, having high-quality wood utilized in the woodworking industry, marginally in the food industry, and in folk medicine. Additionally, it is an important part of landscape diversity in Europe. The service tree exhibits excellent ecological characteristics such as longevity and drought resistance. The book is divided into twelve chapters, addressing the history, morphological features, genetic variability, methods of propagation and cultivation, utilization, pomology, and phytopathological issues. In 2023, co-author Mgr. Zdeněk Špíšek, Ph.D., received the Dean's Award from the Dean of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University for the contribution of this book to educators and authors advancing the field of science.
