Blowflies Calliphora vicina and Lucilia sericata as passive vectors of Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium, M. a. paratuberculosis and M. a. hominissuis
Original language description
M. a. patuberculosis isolates from two blowfly species Calliphora vicina and Lucilia caesar and intestinal mucosa of two cows with paratuberculosis were RFLP type B-C1. Isolates were obtained from C. vicina and L. caesar blowflies captured the next day when no animal infected with causal agent of tuberculosis was slaughtered. Presence of M. a. paratuberculosis RFLP type B-C1, M. a. avium IS901+ and IS1245+, and M. a. hominissuis IS901- and IS1245+ was observed. Various developmental stages of blowflieswere investigated after experimental infection of the larvae of Calliphora and Lucilia genera. M. a. avium of identical genotype and RFLP type was isolated from larvae of C. vicina on days 4 and 11 post infection (p. i.) and from larvae of L. sericata onday 4 p. i. M. a. paratuberculosis of identical RFLP type was isolated on day 2 p. i. Investigation of infection distribution inside the bodies of blowflies revealed that mycobacteria were isolated from the abdomen and head.
