    Antimicrobial and anticancer peptides

  • Original language description

Antimicrobial peptides are gene-coded polypeptides that exist in various species, ranging from bacteria, fungi, amphibians, plants, to animals, including humans. In invertebrates, they are the only host defense molecules, whereas in vertebrates these molecules are the key components of innate immunity and may serve as signal molecules to trigger further adaptive immune response. Their amino acid composition, amphipathicity, cationic charge and size allow them to attach to and insert into membrane bilayers to form pores by 'barrel-stave', 'carpet' or 'toroidal-pore' mechanisms. Cationic antimicrobial peptides provide new hope in a time when conventional antibiotics have been rapidly losing efficacy in the treatment of infections due to problems associated with resistance. It is extremely encouraging to observe these new compounds move through early preclinical to phase III clinical trials in such areas as infectious diseases, cancer and wound healing.
