Mycobacterial Screening of Czech Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) Populations in Overwintering Sites, 2004-2006

  • Original language description

Over-wintering sites (OWs) are fenced submontane forested areas in which wild red deer (Cervus elaphus) populations stay during the winter months. The main purpose of OWs is to prevent deer from inflicting damage on forests. According to our knowledge, this is the first time that OWs have been monitored for the presence of mycobacterial pathogens (causative agents of bovine tuberculosis, paratuberculosis and avian tuberculosis). Out of 2212 fecal samples cultivated between 2004 and 2006 only one testedpositive, for M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis. Differentiation using IS900 RFLP showed that the isolate was of the B-C9 RFLP type, exclusively found in cattle in this region. Such results could suggest an only modest impact of the studied mycobacterialpathogens for wild red deer populations, a low risk of OWs in mediating intensive contact among individuals, or limited direct or indirect contact of wild ruminants with domestic ruminants characterized by higher prevalence rates of parat
