Occurrence of Escherichia coli carrying predilection factors for APEC in different stages of poultry industry
Original language description
Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) are the etiological agents of serious avian disease associated with variety of clinical signs from localized infections to systemic septicaemia. Current diagnostics is based on anamnestic, clinical and pathological findings and bacteriological examination. Recent studies have been focused on detection of virulence genes, which are responsible for pathogenicity E. coli in birds. A single gene exclusively associated with APEC has not been identified yet, therefore the differentiation of commensal and pathogenic E. coli is based on simultaneous detection of set of genes, which are encoding adhesins, antiphagocytic activity, serum resistance or system for iron acquisition. The detection of these predilection factors enables confirmation of clinical signs based diagnostics but also monitoring of APEC reservoirs and ways of their transmission. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of APEC predilection factors in E. coli isolated from different levels of the poultry industry.
