The effects of microplastics on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Original language description
19th Interdisciplinary Toxicology Conference TOXCON, Slovakia – Vyhne, 26th – 28th June 2019 – poster. The water pollution caused by plastics is the modern and commonly discuss issue in past decades. Plastics could be characterized by their structure and size; microplastics are usually defined as particles at range between 20 µm and 5 mm. The main source of microplastics in water environment is human use and, due to that, their environmental presence is widespread. The microplastics have the ability to negatively affect the development, behaviour and physiological indices of non-target fish and other water organisms, as it was previously published in various studies. Nevertheless, their mechanism of action wasn’t still fully understood. Thus, due to limited information and topicality of this problematics, it is necessary to focus on this environmental pollution caused by plastics. Our study is focused on the impact of polyethylene microparticles (size 40 – 48 µm) on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) organism. The experiment will be performed in accordance to the Fish Juvenile Growth Test (OECD 215) and microparticles will be incorporated into the feed (commercial pellets) of experimental fish. Three experimental groups will be tested – microplastics in the concentrations 0.5%, 2% and 5% of the feed/day. The fish will be fed twice a day with the amount 2% of their wet weight. In summary, there will be three experimental tanks plus one control without addition of microplastics in feed (n = 20 / 1 group) and the experiment will be performed in the duplicate. Whole experiment will be in duration 8 weeks (14-days long period of acclimatization and 6 weeks of experimental phase). In the end of experiment, the haematological, biochemical, histological and immunological indices will be evaluated. The result data will be added later.
