Lab on a Chip Approach to Develop System Predicting Stenosis Stability
Original language description
Thromboembolic diseases like ischemic stroke are leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Internal carotid stenosis with unstable atherosclerotic plaque is an important condition often leading to the ischemic stroke. Nowadays it is still unclear why some plaques are stable and other unstable creating thromboembolus (thus ischemic stroke). A prediction of plaque stability could help in surgery decision making. We considered the lab on a chip approach with creation of in vitro carotid models with stenosis based on patient’s data. Further, we established physiological flow in the models and studied hemodynamic parameters in healthy parts of carotids and with atherosclerotic plaques. Biochemical surface modifications of models were also considered.
