Salmonella Typhimurium-based inactivated vaccine containing wide spectrum of bacterial antigens which mimics protein expression changes during different stages of an infection process

  • Original language description

Non-typhoid Salmonella infections constitute a persistent problem in veterinary medicine having considerable zoonotic potential. Among technical and hygienic measures, vaccination may be one of the options of how to prevent Salmonella infections in animal breedings and thus a transmission to human consumers. However, the efficiency of available commercial or experimental vaccines against non-typhoid Salmonella strains is not yet sufficient. We followed the path of inactivated vaccine that is safe and well-accepted but the antigen offer is limited. We improved this by diverse cultivation conditions mimicking bacterial protein expression during the natural infection process. The vaccine was prepared and applied to post-weaned piglets. A mixture of recombinant Salmonella proteins was also used as a recombinant vaccine for comparison. The efficiency of both approaches was determined by S. Typhimurium challenge. Animals vaccinated with the mixture of Salmonella cultures elicited lower increase in body temperature and lower bacterial burden of internal organs.
