Life Cycle Assessment of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Environment ((Chapter 11)
Original language description
In recent decades, the worldwide consumption of pharmaceuticals and usage of personal care products have grown. Due to improper waste management and imperfect purification in wastewater treatment plants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products are present in surface waters at concentrations between nanograms and micrograms per litre. These concentrations can affect the physiological development, behaviour and metabolic processes of non-target aquatic species and even humans, if we consider drinking water and edible animal tissues as sources of toxicity. Nowadays, sustainability and environmental protection are the main goals of most manufacturers and consumers. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the life cycles of the personal care products and pharmaceuticals used on a daily basis, along with their environmental footprint. Life cycle assessment is the process of identifying and quantifying inputs and outputs in the manufacture of personal care products and pharmaceuticals, including distribution, usage and degradation processes. This assessment of the environmental impact of a specific product is commonly referred to as the “cradle-to-gate” and “cradle-to-grave” analyses. Life cycle assessment aims to create products that are more sustainable and provide consumers with a way to maintain household sustainability in all common processes, such as washing, cleaning, personal hygiene and healthcare. Overall, life cycle assessment is applied to identify the environmental impacts of a specific cosmetic product or pharmaceutical. This assessment should lead to greener production. However, there are still major gaps in the assessment methodology which make the individual studies inhomogeneous and unreliable. In addition, there is a lack of studies concerning these problems, yet as pharmaceuticals and personal care products are substances that pollute most water resources, these studies need to be addressed.
