The article presents the content of a lecture by Prof. Dr. Sarne De Vliegher, DVM, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ECVPH, leader of the M-teamUGent with the title Bovine Mastitis, what’s new? This was the opening lecture of the Mastitis and Udder Health section, presented at the 23rd Central European Buiatrics Congress (XXIII MEBC) held in the Czech Republic in April 2024. The most important aspect of udder health is maximizing efforts in mastitis prevention. This primarily involves effective early treatment of potentially treatable animals, culling of chronically infected individuals, and reducing the incidence of new mastitis by limiting infectious pressure and boosting immunity. Relatively newer practices include selective dry cow therapy, the use of internal teat sealants, selective treatment of clinical mastitis targeted with on-farm culture, and increased use of vaccines against mastitis.
