Agricultural Education as a Determinant of Rural Development in the Czech Republic
Original language description
Focusing on the case of the Czech Republic, this paper argues that there is a substantial relationship between the development of rural areas on the one hand and the issue of agricultural education and qualification on the other. The paper introduces thespecifics of Czech rural areas, relates to the changing definitions and discourses which underlines these definitions. In particular, the post-productivist discourse is in focus, suggesting a departure from agriculture in the rural areas. The second part of the paper presents empirical evidence, supporting the post-productivist thesis. The following areas are analysed: the composition of the agricultural workforce, the supply and demand on agricultural labour market, as compared to the whole country´slabour market, and the situation in agricultural educational system, which is studied both in terms of the development in the numbers of graduates and study programmes, and their attitudes toward their future careers.
