    [18F]fluorocholine PET/CT parathyroid imaging - e pluribus unum

  • Original language description

A paradigm shift in parathyroid imaging observed during the last decade is evident. Original articles, editorials, comments, reviews, and meta-analyses indicate PET/CT superiority over conventional scintigraphy. Although such a statement is generally all right, it does not take into account heterogeneity of the compared techniques. While PET/CT of parathyroid glands is a relatively homogeneous approach (despite some differences in sensitivity, spatial resolution, and imaging protocols), conventional scintigraphy represents a wide spectrum of scintigraphic methods using various radiopharmaceuticals, instruments, and imaging techniques resulting in a wide range of diagnostic accuracy. Properly performed conventional scintigraphy provides good diagnostic results with accuracy comparable to [18F]fluorocholine PET/CT. However, besides similar diagnostic accuracy, [18F]fluorocholine PET/CT still has its important additional advantages. The aim of this mini-review is to briefly summarize recent literature on the diagnostic accuracy of PET/CT and conventional scintigraphy in parathyroid imaging, emphasizing potential of PET/CT to provide a streamlined and standardized imaging approach.
