The new European guidelines on hypertension were published in the December issue of the Journal of Hypertension. It is an extensive document covering 119 pages containing more than 1700 references. It is a collaborative work by 59 authors. The subchapter on hyper- tension in pregnancy has been updated quite substantially. The major pieces of novelty can be summarized as follows: The definition of pre-eclampsia has been broadened. Transient gestational hypertension has been introduced as a new sub-unit of gestational hypertension. Update on the prevention of pre-eclampsia. New thresholds for initiating drug treatment of hypertension in pregnancy.
