BackgroundMandibular canine transmigration is a rare phenomenon in orthodontic practice. The aim of our research is to discover whether impacted mandibular canines have different size and volume that can contribute to the transmigration. The first hypothesis was that transmigrated mandibular canines have significantly bigger crown and shorter root than canines from contralateral side and control group. Second hypothesis was that transmigrated canines had bigger volume than physiologically erupted canines.MethodsA total of 93 CBCT scans from study group were analysed in software InVivo6, mandibular canine was separated from surrounding tissues and measured in 3D. Length of crown, mesio-distal and bucco-lingual dimension of crown and length of root were measured. Afterwards, volume of crown, root and whole tooth were calculated. These measurements were compared with dimensions of canines from contralateral side and control group.ResultsStatistically significant difference was found for crowns of impacted mandibular canines (M-D 6.802 mm, B-L 7.35 mm, Lc 10.43 mm, Lr 12.98 mm) and crowns of canine from control group (M-D 6.655 mm, B-L 7.224 mm, Lc 10.16 mm, Lr 14.05 mm), but there was no statistically significant difference from canines on contralateral side (M-D 6.842 mm, B-L 7.39 mm, Lc 10.36 mm, Lr 14.11 mm). Impacted mandibular canines had shorter root than canines from contralateral side and canines from control group. Volume of their root (Vr 359.07 mm3) did not differ statistically from the volume of the crown of impacted canines (Vc 359.28 mm3). Volume of root from contralateral side (Vr 391.9 mm3) also did not differ statistically from volume of root from control group (Vr 391.53 mm3). Overall, canines (crown and root together) from contralateral side (Vt 753.73 mm3) have bigger volume than canines from control group (Vt 718.89 mm3).ConclusionImpacted mandibular canines had statistically larger crowns than physiologically erupted canines. This etiologic factor can contribute to canine transmigration.
