Dengue Fever in Travel Medicine: Epidemiology and Vaccination Options
Original language description
Dengue fever is a viral illness of global importance, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Its incidence is rising significantly, driven primarily by climate change, urbanization, and increasing human mobility. This review article provides an overview of dengue vaccination and available or candidate vaccines, with a particular focus on CYD-TDV (Dengvaxia, Sanofi Pasteur) and TAK-003 (Qdenga, Takeda). The vaccines differ both in the available efficacy and safety data and in their recommended use. While CYD-TDV is indicated only for individuals with a confirmed history of prior dengue infection, TAK-003 is approved for use in dengue-naïve individuals aged four years and older. The aim of this article is to compare current recommendations for the use of TAK-003 among travelers across different European countries, highlight variations in vaccination policies, and provide a comprehensive summary of the latest knowledge on dengue vaccination in the context of travel medicine.
