The history of the production of glass Christmas tree ornaments and the history of decorating Christmas trees are a remarkable and integral part of our cultural history. Without them, Christmas as we know it would lose some of its magic. It is therefore no wonder that handmade glass Christmas tree ornaments are still sought after on both the European and the American market, albeit now mainly as luxury goods. It is by virtue of their supreme artistic and artisanal accomplishments and ingenious entrepreneurial acumen that traditional companies from Czechia and Germany have enjoyed lasting success in this highly competitive market. The enormous popularity of Christmas might lead one to believe that researchers would be similarly interested in the topic. In truth, however, this is not the case. While there are numerous popular science books that identify and describe social customs and rituals based on ethnographic findings, academic studies on the modern and cultural history of the holiday are quite rare. The study is primarily devoted to a chronologically ordered, comparative description of the global development of the production of glass Christmas tree ornaments, with special attention to Europe (Germany, Bohemia) and the USA.
