Intraspecific cranial osteology of the Grass Snake Natrix natrix with comments on the evolution of the species
Original language description
The common snakes of the polytypic species N. natrix belong to the most widespread snakes in Europe. The fossil record of N. natrix since the Lower Pleistocene is also very rich. Several attempts were made to resolve the evolution of the species but no account was taken of the intraspecific morphological variability. The main aim of the study is not only to compare the subspecies on the posterior braicase (as it was studied earlier) but also on the remaining cranial elements. Some living subspecies canpartially be distinguished from each other. This is especially for Natrix n. astreptiphora.
