Cyrillo-Methodian tradition in folk culture
Original language description
The traditional Cyrillo-Methodian respect, cultivated in the periods of Baroque and Enlightenment became a basis of the Czech national movement in Moravia of the 19th century. Celebrations of the millennial anniversary of the arrival of Cyril and Methodius in 1863 significantly influenced the formation of religious and social life in Moravia, strengthenning local patriotism and the formation of regional awareness (Moravian Slovakia). The oral tradition of the ancient activities of the apostles was revived. The saints´ motif was manifested sparsely in folk-fine art (handwritten prayers, reverse glasspaintings, ceramics), much more often in minor folk graphics, especially in pilgrimage pictures and street prints of prayers reproducing mostly several specific types of depictions by authors of the period.
