During his lifetime, Mendel was a very active member of a significant number of scientific societies, although his scientific research relates directly to one research programme – The Moravian: Silesian Society for the Improvement of Agriculture, Natural and Regional Studies – and cannot be fully understood without considering its historical context.1 Additionally to that, it is difficult to imagine that Mendel’s discovery work would be possible without the inspiring and creative influence of his scientific community, especially of the Nature Research Society in Brno.
