A Twelve Top Tree: Czech Religious Broadside Ballads and Pilgrimage Chapbooks: Exhibition catalogue

  • Original language description

This book is a critical catalogue for the exhibition of the same name, held from 13 May 2022 to 13 November 2022 at the Moravian Museum (in the Palace of Noble Ladies). The catalogue is one of the outputs of the interdisciplinary NAKI II project, Broadside Ballads in the Historical Collections in Brno (DG18P02OVV021), supported by the Ministry of Culture, Czech Republic. The project brought together experts of various specialisms from four academic and heritage institutions in Brno: The Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, the Institute of Ethnology (public research institution), the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Moravian Museum, and the Moravian Library. Czech religious broadside ballads are the main topic of the exhibition and the catalogue. The Czech religious broadside ballad is one of the most significant and multi-layered forms of Czech popular culture from approximately the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. In this project, the religious Czech broadside ballad is looked at in a broader context as one of the key genres of Czech religious chapbooks. In the context of mass print production, a distinctive subgroup of pilgrimage chapbooks is especially accentuated. The chapters present the history, production, distribution, musical aspects, form and content of religious broadside ballads (esp. well-known and lesser-known saints and holidays, their reflections in broadside ballads and folk culture).
