The Maintenance and Transmission of Memory through Media: A Murder in Broadside Ballads, News Periodicals, and Oral Tradition

  • Original language description

The study uses the example of a crime from 1907 to present the two basic types of information media – broadside ballads’ prints, whose popularity was fading by this time, and newspapers of that time, which represented the most accessible source of information for the broader social strata – and their ability to maintain and transmit memory. The text focuses on the similarities and differences in the reporting of murder, whether in terms of the choice of topic, sourcing, transmission of information, working with audiences, or authorship. Drawing on available sources from the year of the event to the present, it analyses the capacities and ways in which memory is maintained and fades through these media. In addition, the study also analyses passing of the information about the crime in oral folk tradition, collective and family memory, and their mutual influences.
