How to distinguish unfinished leaf points and bifacial knives? Testing theoretical assumptions on bifaces from Moravský Krumlov IV, Layer 0
Original language description
With the undeniable shift in knowledge about the technology of stone industry production, the classification of lithic collections can be in some cases complicated despite the existence of typical fossiles directeurs. This problem clearly arises, for example, in two transitional industries of the EUP complex. Traditionally, the Micoquian is characterised by asymmetrical bifacial tools, while symmetrical leaf points define the Szeletian. Symmetry or asymmetry in general is relatively simple to identify on finished products, but their recognition in unfinished preforms and broken pieces is a complex issue. The symmetry or asymmetry of a bifacial tool can depend on the preserved shaping stage and therefore the use of traditional morphological description can lead to mistakes. In further studies, we therefore propose to analyse rather the technological symmetries/asymmetries of the preform using a Knapping Asymmetry Measure method (part of a scar pattern analysis). In an ideal case, refittings can support this analysis because they record earlier stages of the shaping. The Layer 0 assemblage from Moravský Krumlov IV gives us a perfect opportunity to evaluate the theoretical assumptions due to the absolute lack of finished pieces at the site and the ambiguous morphology of the assemblage. Both refitting and Knapping Asymmetry Measure methods yielded results that confirm the production of leaf points at Moravský Krumlov IV.
