The Judgement of Paris by Luca Cambiaso in the Strahov Picture Gallery
Original language description
The picture gallery of the Strahov Premonstratensian Monastery in Prague is in possession of a painting depicting the Judgement of Paris, which has recently been identified as a work originally in the collections of Emperor Rudolf II at Prague Castle. The author of this painting was the Genovese painter Luca Cambiaso (1527–1585). Unfortunately it is not known how Cambiaso’s painting found its way into Rudolf’s collections. We are only aware that Judgement of Paris and other paintings with erotic motifs were purchased in 1623 by the Frankfurt goldsmith and merchant Daniel de Briers (+1633). Why and when the painting returned to Prague and landed in the art collections of the Premonstratensian Monastery remains a mystery.
