Regional variations of traditional folk houses plaster pigments in South East and Central Moravia, Czech Republic
Original language description
Colouring of folk buildings, its variations in time and sorts of pigments used have not been given enough attention in the area of interest so far. The article is the result of interdisciplinary study of ethnology and geology. It is based on a comparison of available material of ethnographic origin, which is based on a thorough analysis of published written material and an extensive literature search dealing with the color scheme of traditional buildings. An essential part was field research focused on sampling of used plasters. The article presents the results of the study of twenty four interior and exterior colored plasters taken from six buildings in the localities of two Moravian ethnographic areas. The basic methods of material analyzes were optical polarizing microscopy, powder X-ray diffractometers and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that all studied blue plasters are stained with ultramarine, dark red shades with ferric pigments of industrial origin (so-called ferric dusters) and yellow one by ochre. The deep green was due to organic synthetic pigment, whereas the lighter shades due to green earth, a natural glauconite clay in these cases. Based on the analyzed sample, no qualitative differences were found in the composition of pigments of folk buildings in south-eastern and central Moravia. Based on the examined set of samples, no qualitative difference in the composition of pigments were found between South East and Central Moravia. In both the regions not only lime but also plaster or Paris or a mixture of both the material was used to produce plasters and renders in the past.
