A collective portrait of land surveyors in Bohemia and Moravia in the 17th and 18th centuries
Original language description
The study focuses the basic characteristics of the work of a land surveyor (a geodetist) in Bohemia and Moravia in the pre-modern (pre-Enlightenment) period. The surveyors are authors of detailed maps and plans, which have survived in large numbers and have not yet been studied in detail, but in any case they provide a unique testimony to the pre-modern landscape. Attention is given to the social status of the surveyors, their family background, education and other aspects of their lives and work, as well as other fields of endeavour in which the surveyors were involved. As this article summarizes the issues in Bohemia and Moravia, it provides a basis for comparative research on the topic across the former Habsburg monarchy.
