Original language description
This study is a comparison of the symbolic messages of two festive court musical dramatic works: Il fuoco eterno custodito dalle Vestali (1674) and Costanza e Fortezza (1723). Both operas originated in times of an absence of male successors in the Habsburg dynasty. Both Emperors, Leopold I. and Charles VI., abandoned the demonstration of strength and power and did not depict themselves on a symbolic level as absolute rulers. The plot takes place in both operas in the ancient Roman republic, which is protected from enemy invasion through the intervention of the gods, not by force. Each of the two monarchs presents a different solution to the unfavourable situation. Leopold I declares hope for the arrival of male offspring, Charles VI, defends the Pragmatic Sanction.
