Production and Export of ‘Rajnochovice Ceramics’ in the 19th Century
Original language description
The paper focuses on Rajnochovice pottery (see below). In addition to the traditional ethnological approach, archaeology and natural sciences, represented by archaeometric analyses, are applied for the first time in its investigation. Thanks to these analyses, new information has been obtained that has expanded the knowledge of Rajnochovice pottery, especially in the area of the composition of the ceramic mass and the production process. Rajnochovice ceramics is the summary name for the ceramic production of small manufactures and workshops in the rural mountainous area of Hostýnské Vrchy that were in operation in the 19th century. The workshops were located far from others centres of ceramic production and trade routes, and they were also far away from deposits of quality clay. The availability of cheap wood, which served as an energy source for kilns, gave rise to ceramic production. The oldest style of production (creamware) did not differ from ceramics manufactured in other parts of the Czech lands. After the year 1842, however, the potters invented a new style of pottery called ‘majolín’. The workshops in Hostýnské vrchy made dining ceramics for the urban middle classes, including typical table vessels. Thanks to their interesting rustic appearance and specific matter Rajnochovice ceramics became widely popular and was exported to many European countries.
