Using fish as bioindicators for chemical pollution of water supply reservoirs in the Odra River basin

  • Original language description

In the Kružberk, Šance and Morávka water supply reservoirs belonging to the Odra basin, the genotoxicity hazard from exposure to chemical pollution was monitored in the populations of predatory, benthivorous, planktivorous and omnivorous fishes. Peripheral blood erythrocytes of eight fish species were subjected to the micronucleus test to examine the dimensional and morphological variability of the micronuclei. The results obtained in Esox lucius, Perca fluviatilis, Abramis brama, Rutilus rutilus, Salmo trutta, Cottus gobio, Phoxinus phoxinus, Squalius cephalus led us to suspect that genotoxic substances from anthropogenic sources are present in the water. The results encourage us to continue our monitoring work and to focus on other genotoxicity markers such as erythrocytic nuclear alteration frequencies.
