The Water Mill in Slup, a virtue of necessity or a unique museum of milling?

  • Original language description

The known history of the water mill in Slup dates back to 1512, but it was probably founded before the first half of the 15th century. Most likely, it was rebuilt to its present late Renaissance style in the last third of the 16th century. Its generous design concept ensured its preservation in a form not much changed, as the building was upgraded with larger mill machines without problems during the period of modernization. In the period after the Second World War, the mill ceased to serve its purpose, the mill equipment was removed and the building deteriorated. The reconstruction, which was carried out in the 1970s, saved the building from delapidation. The lack of original machinery enabled a unique museum exhibition presenting the development of milling to be built showing four milling installations ranging from the late Middle Ages to the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition is located in the residential part of the mill and informs visitors about other aspects of the history of grain processing.
