The work described in this paper is undertaken in the frame of the joint research project ?HiTeMS? funded by the European metrology research program and the European national metrology institutes (NMIs). The NMI partners of this project assist industrialpartners in developing new techniques and solutions to be implemented in the processes or to be applied to sensors and measurement devices for temperatures above 1000 °C. In this frame, the work package 2 focuses, among other objectives, on the determination of procedures for the testing of base-metal thermocouples as regards their stability and lifetime. Indeed, at the present time no established methodology exists for the testing of thermocouples to assess their stability and lifetime over long high-temperature exposure. Usually these tests are performed by the manufacturers and the results are not accessible in the public domain.
