ANNEALING AND OXIDATION EFFECTS FOR SPRT FOR OLD AND NEW SENSOR DESIGNS

  • Original language description

As SPRTs are the interpolating instrument of the ITS-90 it is important to know their behavior in the calibration process and in the everyday use. Currently, oxidation effects in long-stem SPRTs represent the largest source of uncertainty between –40 °C and 450 °C. Current quantitative data on oxidation effects is based on work performed in the 1970s but since then the design and construction of modern SPRTs has changed with manufacturers reducing the partial pressure of oxygen in SPRT sheaths to reduce these effects and the subject urgently needs revisiting. In the work were used two types of SPRT. First is the Hereaus 47 PTB 77 sensor from 1970s, which was very rarely used. The second is commercially available Tinsley 5187 SA. Together 6 pieces of sensors were tested. Annealing part of experiments deals with comparison of two types of annealing procedures in water – zinc subrange of ITS-90. The oxidation parts deals with study of SPRT resistance change in the temperatures of 156 °C and 232 °C. This corresponds to Indium and Tin calibration points. In comparison to that, the data from calibration of SPRT in Czech Metrology Institute during past 10 years were used and results were compared with previous experimental results. All of these data will be compiled and used for recommendation for annealing and oxidation uncertainty component for using and calibrating of SPRT.
