Extending the high temperature range of acoustic gas thermometry

  • Original language description

Following a brief introduction about the principle and methods of acoustic gas thermometry, we describe the relevant technical features of an acoustic gas thermometer designed to operate in the temperature range between 300 K and 1000 K for thermometric gas pressures up to 1 MPa. The main components of the apparatus include a heating furnace, a vacuum- and pressure-tight vessel and a quasi-spherical acoustic/microwave resonator, as well as a custom system of acoustic waveguides and microwave cables used to drive signals from the instrumentation at ambient temperature in the laboratory to the gas-filled resonator maintained at high temperature. We report microwave and acoustic results respectively obtained in vacuum and using argon as the thermometric gas. These preliminary results, recorded up to the maximum temperature of 550 K show that the apparatus, in its present configurations suffers severe limitations in terms of operability. Nevertheless, the same results demonstrate that remarkable precision in both acoustic and microwave measurements can be achieved with rather simple instrumentation and tools. Finally, we briefly discuss several modifications of the apparatus needed to improve its performance and to further increase its working temperature range.
