Effect of the insertion depth on calibration results of vane anemometers

  • Original language description

In this paper we show that velocity indication of vane anemometers with a propeller placed at the end of a mounting rod installed perpendicularly to air flow can vary by several percent (up to 9% in our tests) if the length of the mounting rod exposed to flow (insertion depth) is changed. Four vane anemometers of different dimensions were tested for velocities (2-20) m/s and for the insertion depths (7.5-37.5) cm. Interlaboratory comparison was conducted showing how the effect influences the calibration results in five different wind tunnels with test section diameters/widths from 25.5 cm to 100 cm. Important conclusions were drawn for air speed calibration laboratories whose uncertainties are usually an order of magnitude smaller than the variations of the measurement error observed for some of the anemometers. Also, it was shown that the effect can be nearly eliminated by changing the cross-sectional profile of the mounting rod from circle to an airfoil.
