Analysis of the effect of mutual inductance in a precision cage current shunt

  • Original language description

The article presented the improved construction of the 500 mA precision cage current shunt operating between DC and 1 MHz and its combined mathematical/finite element model (FEM). The mathematical model, in contrast to those presented in the literature, takes into account the effect of the mutual inductance between input (current) and output (potential) circuit. The value of the mutual inductance was calculated using finite element method and allowed for analysis of its impact onto the most important characteristics: ac-dc difference and phase shift in a wide frequency range. The results showed that the mutual inductance can be responsible for approximately 6 % of the phase error increment at 1 MHz. The developed theoretical model was validated by measurements of the shunt prototype performed at the Czech Metrology Institute. The measured ac-dc transfer difference and phase shift of the shunt prototype are in good agreement with values obtained from the combined mathematical/FEM model.
