Waves of cognitive-behavioural therapy in the treatment of chronic pain
Original language description
This chapter attempts to provide a well-arranged summary of the historical development of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of pain ranging from behavioral and cognitive-behavioral to cognitive approaches using the elements of stress management. In addition, we provide an overview of some of the newer approaches of cognitive-behavioral therapy, namely the element of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and mindfulnessbased approaches. In conclusion, we summarize the pros and cons of the third wave of CBT and we describe potential strategies towards further development in this field based primarily on contextual CBT.
