Regarding Insulin Initiation in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and the Risk for Hypoglycemia
Original language description
We read with interest the review article by Jaqueline Smith, "Practical Tips for Insulin Use in Primary Care" that has been published in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes. It provides a useful outline of the basic framework for the initiation of insulin therapy in people with type 2 diabetes who have failed on oral antidiabetes therapy and how prandial and basal insulins can be used. While the risk of hypoglycemia is mentioned, it is introduced primarily as a potential barrier to the initiation of insulin therapy from the viewpoint of the patient as user and the medical practitioner as provider, with only a cursory mention of the risks associated with various insulin preparations.
