Comment on: Can first cervical vertebrae misalignment be one of the possible etiology of globus pharyngeus?
Original language description
Yaşaroğlu et al. hypothesised that globus pharyngeus might be caused by an irritation of C1 spinal nerve caused by misalignment of C1 vertebra (atlas) by two ways, (i) by repetitive stimulation of C1 nerve producing a foreign sensation in the geniohyoid and thyrohyoid muscles, or (ii) by convergence between C1 nerve and trigeminus in the descending pathways. Although these theories are undoubtedly interesting, there might be a much more simple and more probable explanation. Our patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunctions often have misalignments of cervical vertebrae as an important part of their clinical picture, as well as pharyngeal functional disturbances including globus pharyngeus. After few months of manual therapy (physiotherapy), most of these functional changes improve, in correlation with the correction of cervical vertebral alignment, which we always verify with X-ray.
