Side Effects of Long-Term Glutamine Supplementation

  • Original language description

In the article are discussed negative consequences of the following side effects of chronic consumption of glutamine-enriched diet: alterations in amino acid transport across the cell membrane, enhanced production of glutamine metabolites due to its enhanced breakdown, accumulation of glutamine precursors due to impaired endogenous synthesis of glutamine, alterations in amino acid concentrations in body fluids, alterations in the immune system, effect on tumor growth, and effect of the withdrawal of glutamine supplementation. It is concluded that enhanced intake of glutamine has substantial side effects and long-term studies should be performed to justify chronic consumption of glutamine-enriched diet.
