The Function of Relative Clauses (in comparison with postmodifying participles): Foregrounding
Original language description
The paper discusses the capacity of two postmodifying forms - finite adnominal relative clauses and postmodifying participles - to perform the foregrounding function. The ability to express foregrounding (posteriority) is confined to finite clauses and, moreover, the clauses can be ordered according to their aptitude to express foreground information as follows: continuative clauses - clauses with sentential antecedents - restrictive clauses with indefinite antecedents.
