The Translator's Playwright: Karel Mušek and J.M. Synge

  • Original language description

A critical study examining the first Czech translations of J.M. Synge's plays by Karel Mušek, the circumstances of their appearance, their first stagings and their reception. It maps the interaction between the playwright and the translator, including Mušek's stay in Ireland during which he met prominent figures of the Literary Revival, and brings to the fore the inspiration that the newly founded Irish national theatre drew from the National Theatre in Prague. Supplemented with historical photographs and a complete bibliography of Czech translations and productions of Synge's work.
