Post-Communism and Social Movements
Original language description
Social movements in post-Communist world are generally believed underdeveloped and weak.Given that various social movements and their organizations form a standard group of collective political actors in the established democracies nowadays, one might even wonder whether the extant regimes in post-Communist East-Central Europe can at all claim to be real democracies. In terms of political mobilization, they seem to be miles away from the Western social movement societies, defined by the presence of capable, institutionalized, and professionalized activist organizations. Going beyond the East/West dichotomy, this entry presents a more complex picture of post-Communist social movement activism.
