National Self-Representation in and beyond a Multinational City: A Serbian "Beseda" in Pest in 1867
Original language description
The chapter looks at the Serbian appropriation of Buda and Pest in the 1860's, focusing in particular on the Serbian "Besedas", the cultural events that were organized in the twin city at that period. In the first part, the role of Buda and Pest in Serbian national movement is explained. The chapter proceeds with the general characteristic of "Beseda" as cultural event of specifically Slavic origin, and its appropriation by Serbian community in the Hungarian metropolis. Finally, the three aspects of Beseda are analyzed, that is, Beseda as a manifestation of national identity, Beseda as a medium of self-presentation, and political importance of Beseda.
