The article presents a brief survey of the development of Czech word-formation theory (from the oldest grammars up to contemporary Czech linguistics) and describes and illustrates the main word-formation processes. As an inflectional language Czech has extensive derivational possibilities and a richly developed word-formation system, making use chiefly of derivation, less frequently of composition.
