Yurta-Stroyno. The Rural Settlement in Roman Thrace

  • Original language description

The present paper introduces results of a three-year project conducted by doctoral students of Charles University in Prague in co-operation with the Regional Historical Museum of Yambol. The project was carried out at the Roman rural settlement of Yurta-Stroyno situated in the watershed of the Tundzha river within the Roman province of Thrace. The settlement is dated to the broad span stretching from the 2nd to the 6th century AD. The site has been undergoing heavy destruction for decades thanks to treasure hunters, resulting in a rescue project focused on gaining as much information as feasible before the settlement is destroyed. Excavation and surface survey were combined in order to define the chronological time span and character of the settlement. As a result, we were able to identify areas of iron and glass production and rectified the rural settlement architecture and its possible construction. A marble column and capitals were also identified, suggesting the presence of a representative building. Based on pottery studies, contacts with the Aegean and the Black Sea were attested, as well as Thracian settlement preceding the Roman site.
