Family language management in a multilingual setting: The case of Turkish families in Prague
Original language description
The article deals with the metalanguage behaviour developed by Turkish families newly settled in Prague. Building on Language Management Theory the article investigates the various forms of language management arising from the fact that the family is an organized social institution as well as an environment of everyday interaction. The article suggests that multiple language norms govern the different domains of language use in the focus families. While the first norm requires Turkish to be used as in speech communities which families relate themselves to, the second norm allows that features originating in other languages are used along with or instead of Turkish. The existence of multiple norms explains the existence of two respective patterns of language management documented in the data. The first pattern of language management relates to the multilingual setting as a certain complication for first language acquisition; in the second pattern the positive effect of the multilingual setting on acquiring other languages relevant in the local context is underlined and multiplied.
