Der Autor eröffnet seinen Aufsatz mit der Feststellung, dass in der Kirche und im Christentum die Kategorien des Konservativen und Progressiven ihre Plausibilität eingebüßt haben. In Anbetracht dieses Umstandes plädiert der Autor für ein breiteres Verständnis von Katholismus als Katholizität. Die tradierten Formen der pastoralen Pflege sind heute in keiner Weise zureichend, da sich die Kirche mit vielen konfrontiert sieht, die weder Innen noch Außen stehen, die vielmehr aus religiöser Sicht anonym sind. In diesem Sinne bedeutet Katholizität, also der Ruf der Kirche, offen und aufmerksam zu sein gegenüber diesen Menschen, die extra muros ecclesiae stehen.
