The text explains the circumstances of the establishment of the Center of Ibero-American Studies at the Charles University in Prague. The study of Latin American history and culture in Czechoslovakia is placed into a broader context. It focuses especially on the role of Josef Polišenský in the institutionalization of the discipline as well as in outlining the themes of research and methodological approaches. The overlying theme of the changing mental geography of (Latin) America in popular as well as scientific Czech discourse is also be examined as it travels through the entire history of Czech Ibero-American studies.
