Military Camps in Military Manuals
Original language description
Early modern military manuals dealt with the art of war in its broadest sense, or with specific aspects of warfare such as the infantry, cavalry, artillery or navy. They usually discussed military tactics, strategies, fortifications, but also often raised the issue that will form the focus of this chapter - army camps. Military camps formed a core part of army logistics. They were populated by foot soldiers, but also by members of the cavalry, artillery and tross - a group of non-combatants, which included women, children and sutlers, who moved with the armies.
